American Indian
Warrior Chiefs - Tecumseh, Crazy Horse, Chief Joseph, Geronimo - by Jason
Hook and Richard Hook
European settlement of North America was soon accompanied by violent
conflict with the native peoples, dubbed Indians by the colonists.
Often embittered and incensed by broken treaties and shattered
promises, Indian tribes rose up to resist encroachment and theft of their
lands. In almost every case, they were led by remarkable and charismatic
warrior chiefs.
This volume tells the true stories of four great champions of their
people; resolute and powerful men whose military campaigns, though often
reluctantly commenced, were brilliantly executed. It tells of their cultur,
heritage and way of life, all of which were at stake in the bitter and
bloody fighting.
Over 100 photographs, line illustrations and maps accompany a
detailed text, with dramatic incidents captured in 16 exciting paintings.

The French and Indian
War 1754-1763, The Imperial Struggle for North America by Seymour I
Schwartz
This book presents, for the first time, a description of the battles
and engagements of the war complemented by contemporary maps, drawings,
and engravings of troop movements, views of forts, and portraits of
participants. This book contains 118 illustrations, many from the author's
own collection, as well as from public and private sources in the United
States, Canada and Europe.
The French and Indian War, also called the Great War for the Empire,
changed the map of North America. The battles that occurred between 1753
and 1760 took more lives than the American War of Independence, making the
French and Indian War the bloodiest conflict fought on American soil in
the eighteenth century.
The war pitted the French and their Indian allies against the
English colonists and their Indian allies along the Atlantic seaboard in
an attempt to gain possession of the Ohio Valley. Warriors of legendary
and even heroic stature faced each other. The war afforded George
Washington his first command of troops. It saw the exploits of Captain
Robert Rogers and his Rangers and the dominant role of Sir William
Johnson, the great Indian agent in New York colony. It saw the deaths of
Louis-Joseph de Montcalm and James Wolfe on the Plains of Abraham as the
British captured Quebec. It erased France's political influence form the
continent and established English dominance east of the Mississippi and in
Canada. And it set the stage for the American Revolution and the establishment
of the United States of America. |

Louisbourg 1758,
Wolfe's First Siege by René Chartrand
Louisbourg represented a major threat to Anglo-American plans to
invade Canada. Bypassing it would leave an immensely powerful enemy base
astride the Anglo-American lines of communication - Louisbourg had to be
taken. The siege itself was a tremendous pounding match. Faced with strong
beach defences and rough weather, it took six days to land the troops and
was only achieved by a stroke of daring on the part of a young Brigadier
named James Wolfe, who managed to turn the French beach position. The
story is largely based on first-hand accounts from the journals of several
participants including General Amherst and the French Governor Drucour,
whose excellent account has never been published.

San Juan Hill 1898 by
Angus Konstam
Labelled a 'splendid little war' by Senator John Hay, the Spanish
American War was a peculiar event in America's history, provoked as much
by the press as by political pressures. Here, aided by superbly detailed
maps and artwork, the author deals with the clashes at Las Guasimas and El
Caney, the capture of San Juan Hill, and the naval battle and siege of
Santiago. The war was to mark the end of Spanish sovereignty in her 'New
World', and the establishment of the United States of America as a world
power.

The Alamo 1836,
Santa Anna's Texas Campaign by Stephen L. Hardin
On the morning of 6 March 1836 around 1,100 Mexican
soldiers under Genralissimo Santa Anna stormed a small mission outside San
Antonio, Texas, and slaughtered the garrison of around 200 Texans.
It was not a large battle but its significance vastly outweighed its size
for the name of the mission was the Alamo. Less than two months
later Santa Anna's force was smashed at San Jacinto by a volunteer army
whose battle cry was "Remember the Alamo". Stephen Hardin
details the climactic 1836 campaign which won Texas her independence.
