Badajoz 1812, Wellington's Bloodiest Siege by Ian Fletcher

The fortress towns of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz control the two main routes between Portugal and Spain: if Wellington were to consolidate his position in the Peninsula they had to be taken. Whilst Ciudad Rodrigo fell without much difficulty, the storming of Badajoz was an epic action involving Wellington's infantry in some of the most savage hand-to-hand fighting of the whole Peninsula War. In a nightmare assault on the night of 6 April 1812, Wellington's soldiers hacked their way through the huge medieval walls of the town, which were held with great tenacity, skill and courage by the resolute French and German garrison. Having stormed the town, the battle crazed army went berserk. The horrors of the sacking which followed, as much as the sublime courage of the attackers, have passed into legend.
