The Battle of the Alma, crossing the Alma river during the Crimean War. Military art prints of the Scots Guards, Blackwatch, Royal Green Jackets and other British regiments involved in the Battle of the Alma, published by Cranston Fine Arts.

BATTLE OF ALMA  20th September 1854.

The Crimean war fought by Britain, France and Turkey against Russia. On the 14th September a British-French force of 26,000 men landed northwest of the Crimean peninsula. Began there advance on the Russian naval base of Sebastopol. This force was commanded jointly by Britain and France, with the British Commander being General Lord raglan and the French Commander Marshal Armand Saint-Arnaud.  There advance was blocked by a Russian Force under the command of Prince Aleksandr Menshikov at the Alma River. The British and French Forces attacked the Russians on the Heights overlooking the Alma river, with the British baring most of the fighting. The Russians were driven from their positions on the Heights.  The Russian Losses were 1200 Killed and more than 4,000 captured. The Allied losses were 3,000 British  and 1,000 French casualties.  Soon after the Fighting the French Commander died of Cholera and the French Command passed to General Francois Canrobert.

Grenadier Guards at Alma

Battalions of the 3 regiments of Guards, under General Bentinck, formed a brigade in the First or Duke of Cambridge's Division. At the Alma, the Guards advanced in support of the Light Division in the attack on the Kourgané height on the left, and contributed largely to the victory by driving the Vladimir regiment from its earthworks on the hill. During all the labours of the sege, the trench work, and the horrors of the winter, the Grenadiers took their part and, on October 18th 1854, had the misfortune to lose their commanding officer, Colonel Hood, who was struck by a round shot as he watched their work.
