A
History of the Peninsular War - Volume III. The Biographical
Dictionary of British Officers Killed and Wounded, 1808 - 1814. by
John A Hall
This complementary volume to Sir Charles Oman's monumental study of
the Peninsular War is a comprehensive biographical dictionary of more than
3,000 officers in British, Portuguese and Spanish service killed or
wounded in the seven years of that remarkable campaign. Based on
exhaustive research of primary records and archives, this superbly
detailed reference book draws on data from service records, official
despatches, casualty rolls, medal lists, the London Gazette and
additional original sources to provide an astonishing insight into the
history of the British Army from the point of view of the
individual. Serving as a who's who for British officers, and French
and German officers in British pay, this book is an essential addition to
Peninsular War scholarship. Entries on this casualty roll include
the service histories of individual officers, medals or awards received,
the place, date and cause of death or nature of wound, any subsequent
career details and additional campaign material. Many entries
include eyewitness accounts about the particular officer, taken from
memoirs, diaries and despatches of the period, making this not only a
vital source of information but also a very readable and human
study. A regimental index provides an overview of which British
units participated in the war - from the famous 95th and 52nd to the Royal
Marines, the Chasseurs Britanniques and the Sicilian Regiment - and the
number of casualties incurred by any given regiment. An additional
appendix lists those officers who died of disease, misadventure, natural
causes or accident in the course of the war. Dr John A Hall was a
history professor at Michigan University for ten years and is the author
of numerous articles on military history

Napoleon - His
Wives and Women by Christopher Hibbert
'Bah! Women!' Napoleon declared one day during his
exile on the remote island of St Helena. 'When you don't think of
them you don't need them'
In this absorbing and original book, Christopher
Hibbert investigates the sincerity of this misogynistic exclamation and
presents an aspect of Napoleon both unusual and revealing. He throws
fresh light on his relationships with the women in his family - his
resourceful and strong-willed mother and his three sisters: Caroline, who
became Queen of Naples, the beautiful and sensual Pauline, Princess
Borghese, and the bossy Elisa whom he created Grand Duchess of
Tuscany. Equally illuminating are the author's accounts of the two
women who he married and successively crowned Empress: Josephine, the
charming and wildly extravagant Creole from the West Indian island of
Martinique, who had been imprisoned during the revolutionary Terror, and
Marie-Louise, the Austrian Emperor's daughter, who gave birth to
Napoleon's unfortunate heir, the King of Rome.
The book also records the parts played by the many
mistresses in Napoleon's life. Notorious for his rudeness to the
ladies of his court and for his habit of pinching their cheeks or noses,
he would complain to their faces how plain or ill-dressed they were,
telling one that he had heard that she was 'quick and good in bed'.
From his wife he would brook no complaint about his sexual
escapades. 'I am not like other men', he said. 'The commonly
accepted rules of morality and propriety do not apply to me.' |

Wellington:
The Iron Duke by Richard Holmes
Wellington: The Iron Duke tells the exhilarating story
- both on and off the battlefield - of Britain's greatest ever soldier.
Wellington began his life as Arthur Wesley, a shy,
indolent boy from an impoverished Anglo-Irish noble family. His was
a childhood in which the violin featured more prominently than the
musket. He ended his life as the 'Iron Duke', the man who had saved
Europe from the tyranny of Napoleon and who served as Prime Minister of
Britain at a crucial time in history. At his death, Queen Victoria
wept and called him the greatest man the nineteenth century had produced.
In this compelling book - and accompanying BBC series -
Richard Holmes charts this extraordinary progress, travelling from the
ruins of the family seat in Ireland to the plains of India, where
Wellesley (the family name was changed by his elder brother) first gained
his reputation as a brilliant and courageous commander. But
Wellesley's real genius was proved on the unforgiving landscape of Spain
and Portugal during the Peninsula War - whose horrors are described here
with stunning historical precision and sympathy. Holmes explains how
Wellesley beat Napoleon's generals again and again, making him a national
hero and ultimately winning him the title Duke of Wellington. But he
still has to face the ultimate challenge - the fight against Napoleon in
person on the field of Waterloo. |

Corunna 1809 - Sir
John Moore's Fighting Retreat by Philip Haythornthwaite
This book relates the story of the retreat to Corunna, one of the
epic campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars. Late in 1808 Sir John Moore found
himself virtually alone with his small British army deep inside Spain. The
armies of his Spanish allies had been overwhelmed and he faced a
victorious French force under the Emperor Napoleon. He had little option
but to order a retreat to the port of Corunna. This became the most
arduous of trials with armies traversing over appalling roads in the
depths of winter. Somehow Moore held his outnumbered, exhausted men
together as they struggled to reach safety. Finally at Corunna Moore's
army turned to face its tormentor.

Bonaparte by
Correlli Barnett
Correlli Barnett's brilliant study of Napoleon Bonaparte dispels
several of the myths surrounding this greatest figure of his age. Born in
Corsica, Napoleon was never truly a Frenchman, in the same way that Hitler
was never a true German. Like Hitler, he was a demagogic politician on the
make, and his generalship was frequently slapdash and lucky.
'Bonapart' presents a powerful, original and convincing portrait of
its subject, both as a politician and as a commander in the field. The
narrative is masterly in detail, vigorous in style, surprising in its
judgements and compellingly interesting and exciting to read.

Dictionary of the
Napoleonic Wars by David Chandler
The military campaigns of Napoleon form one of the most significant
episodes of modern world history. The Dictionary of the Napoleonic Wars is
a complete, concise reference work which covers all the warring nations,
their important soldiers, sailors, strategies, armaments and the battles
that shaped Napoleon's career.
The book includes much fascinating material - the brilliant
campaigns that Napoleon himself commanded, as well as related events such
as the Peninsula War and the American War of 1812. There are portraits of
hundreds of noteworthy characters, and to overcome the tendency of a
dictionary to fragment its subject, the author has included large-scale entries
on topics of general importance from Coalitions and Coups d'Etat to the
French Revolution and the Duke of Wellington.

The Peninsula War
by Roger Parkinson
The Peninsula War was a war of contrasts; a war fought in the icy
passes of the high Pyrenees and on the burning wastes of the Sierra Morena;
a war of infinite cruelty yet remarkable courtesy; a war in which debonair
British officers fought alongside ragged Spanish partisans.
It began in 1808 with Napoleon at the height of his power, and ended
with his attempted suicide in 1814 - he called it his 'Spanish ulcer'. In
a series of savagely fought battles - Cuidad, Rodrigo, Badajoz, Salamanca
and Vittoria - Wellington's 'scum' (the French opinion of his army)
avenged Corunna and swept Spain clean of France's finest troops.
Roger Parkinson's narrative vividly recaptures the horror,
excitement and drudgery of history's first guerilla war. The book's many
superb illustrations ably complement the stirring text.

Jena 1806
The 1806 Jena
campaign ranks among Napoleon's greatest military achievements: in just 33
days, the Grande Armée won two decisive battles in a blitzkrieg style
that demonstrates every aspect of the Napoleonic system of warfare. In
this sequel to Austerlitz 1805, David Chandler describes and analyses the
strategy of the campaign, the twin battles of Austerlitz and Jena and the
remorseless pursuit of the Prussians that ensued, providing the most
authoritative and incisive concise coverage of this military masterpiece
yet published.
