History of the Crusades, the battle of Nicopolis 1396, the final defeat of the Crusaders by the Ottoman empire with their Serbian allies. The Nicopolis campaign well documented in the book Nicopolis 1396, the Last Crusade by David Nicolle. Published by Osprey Books, available from the military print company.

By the late 14th Century the once mighty Byzantine Empire had been reduced to little more than the city of Constantinople itself. In 1391 the Ottoman ruler, Yildirim Bãyazîd, besieged the city. Pope Boniface IX preached a crusade and John de Nevers, the son of the Duke of Burgundy, led a Franco-Belgian army of 10,000 eastwards. They joined forces with Sigismund, King of Hungary, and at Nicopolis on the Danube they met the Ottoman army in battle. Driven on by their arrogance and against the advice of their Hungarian and Transylvanian allies, the Crusaders charged the Ottoman positions, broke through and were in turn smashed by the Ottoman heavy cavalry and their Serbian allies. The last Crusade ended on the banks of the Danube as the Crusaders desperately sought to escape from the pursuing Turks.
